Ecological and Cultural Significance of Local Parks : Unit Plan

Weeks Six & Seven

Essential Question

How can we communicate our messages and ideas through various mediums?

The focus of this week will be on students showcasing their visual art piece through a medium that works well for all group members. Students will be asked to demonstrate their interpretation of the art piece, connect it to the Indigenous culture and understanding of the land they have learnt throughout the past few weeks.

Lesson 1

Sequence

Students will have a lesson in found object art and the different ways that they can showcase their visual art piece. They will receive feedback from their teacher on how their final project is coming along, and will have class time to make finish their item.

Assessment

Formative: Teacher will conduct walk-arounds to hear students’ conversations, engagement level and contribution and to provide feedback on their project

Summative: using the rubric

Differentiation

Students have the option to use forms of art to showcase their idea and myth about the Indigenous culture.

They may deliver their final project through a learning style that fits them best, such as  through speech, visuals (images or videos), and text (written paper)..

Students will be split into groups selected by the teacher keeping in mind learning ability levels to ensure group cohesiveness.

Lesson 2

Sequence

Project work.

Students will be given required resources to make changes to their project based on initial feedback.

Further research can be conducted, tools for recording and presenting their projects will be made available, and the teacher will intervene strategically to remind students of timeline, to refer to their rubrics, present just-in-time applicable mini lessons where students struggle, and ask students to use their peers for guidance.

Assessment

Formative: informal conferences with groups and whole-class discussion to allow students to receive feedback and self-regulate.

Differentiation

The just-in-time teaching of mini lessons in these weeks allows the learning to be student-driven and needs-based.

Groups who are more confident with self-directed learning will need less assistance than others, allowing the teacher to spend time with groups/individuals in need of closer intervention.
