Ecological and Cultural Significance of Local Parks : Unit Plan

Week Eight

Essential Question

How can we get the local public invested in protecting our parks?

The focus of this week will be on the finale and celebration of learning throughout the unit. Students will learn from one another, share their understandings, and make strides to change the world around them. Not only will this week be a culmination of the weeks prior, but it will also give an opportunity to reflect upon their learning journey and the next steps they will take.

Lesson 1

Sequence

Curating an art show:

This week students will curate their tour prototype, and a collection of art pieces to create a cohesive story.

The celebration of learning will occur where parents, community members and friends will see their project in total.

Resources

Space for celebration of learning.

Curation prompts and examples.

Assessment

Summative:

Students will self-evaluate their final project against the rubric that was created.

Differentiation

Students are given an opportunity to showcase their artwork in whatever style they choose; the show is differentiated in that students create their story of how it fits and represents their learning.

Lesson 2

Sequence

Giving good critiques:

Students will visit each other’s curated project exhibitions and give them final feedback, praise, and questions.

A mini lesson will be given to give examples of being kind, constructive, and curious.

Students will be expected to respond to feedback, and answer questions to the best of their ability.

Resources

Feedback form for students to fill out for each group.

Assessment

Completed feedback and response to feedback; orally or written.

Differentiation

Students are given an opportunity to respond to feedback as a conversation with their teacher or in written form to help with communication and prevent getting lost in criticism.

Lesson 3

Sequence

Making a difference:

After the celebration of learning students will have a reflective period where they discuss what they have learned and produce a plan/statement/goal of ways they can continue being active or proactive in their community, parks, and environments.

Resources

Journal

Assessment

Journaling reflection, formative discussion with peers on their learning and role in the community.

Differentiation

Journal entries can be mainly visual with a short description, can be a plan, or a story written to fully explain their understanding of making a difference.
