Unit Overview

This interdisciplinary unit has been designed to span all subjects of Grade 5 for a period of eight weeks. Students will travel to a local park with a wetland, and engage in an ecological study of the park’s biology, its significance to the surrounding community, and the importance of its land to Indigenous cultures.

The project is meant to be carried out at the end of the school year when spring has sprung, after the students have visited the park throughout all seasons, as a culmination of their learning! The final deliverable of the unit is a public exhibition open to family and the community at large. For this celebration of learning, students will create a guided tour for the park in their preferred media format, which the public will be able to attend or access online for later viewing.

Nature-inspired artwork created by the students will also be exhibited, with students performing art-talks and sharing stories about their inspirations, work process, and final products. This concept involves students on several cognitive, emotional, and creative levels, and allows for students to negotiate and integrate disciplines together into their own understanding.
